Harry James Potter is the only child of James and Lily Potter. His name is not short for Harold. Harry has inherited his mother's bright green eyes and his father's unusually untidy jet-black hair. In his younger years, Harry is described as small and skinny for his age. He also has a long thin scar in the middle of his forehead shaped like a bolt of lightning. This is the only physical mark Harry bears from the Killing Curse that Lord Voldemort cast on October 31, 1981, killing both Harry's parents and destroying the house.

Harry's greatest desire is to be normal, with a family that loves him, and for everyone he cares about to be safe and happy. He also comes to realize that this will never truly be possible as long as Voldemort still exists in any form. Harry often puts himself at risk for other people, and often tries to convince others not to put themselves in danger.

However, Harry is depicted with many flaws. He can be angered easily when the people he cares about are insulted or when people do not believe him. Like Ron, he is not always diligent with his studies and is also extremely impulsive. Harry has a very strong sense of loyalty to others and expects loyalty in return. He struggles between self-doubt and over-confidence, and attempts to handle everything himself. However, he has the ability to remain level-headed, and perform at advanced levels during moments of extreme crisis. He has great leadership skills, is fiercely determined, and self-reliant.

Interesting Tidbit:

Harry's wand is of holly and 11 inches long with a single phoenix tail-feather core. Ironically, the tail-feather from the same Fawkes also happens to be the feather found in Lord Voldemort's wand. Coincidence?
